RFID - Myth versus Reality
The hype around the adoption of RFID as the 'hot new technology' continues. The reality is that RFID, despite the fact that this is a relatively mature technology, is still far from mainstream.

RFID TAG DESIGNER: RFID - Myth versus Reality RFID - Myth versus Reality Carla Reed - June 28, 2005 Read Comments Introduction The hype around the adoption of RFID as the hot new technology continues—this is evidenced by the proliferation of trade shows, media events, and other magnets for those in the know and those looking to learn more. One of the recent events—RFID Live, hosted by the RFID Business Journal in Chicago in April—was reminiscent of the techno buzz and media fest of the late 1990s—the days of the

RFID Basics for Retailers
Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology has retailers talking. The reason: RFID helps reduce labor and improves the ability to gather data. Retailers can use this data to make positive changes to business processes, which can be tremendously advantageous for them. With careful planning, an RFID system can provide immediate benefits, as well as long-term competitive and total cost of ownership advantages.

Error Proofing with RFID
Carefully tracking components and assemblies throughout the manufacturing process can prevent costly production and sequencing errors, but executing these procedures can be difficult. While bar codes provide accurate, efficient product identification, they are not viable in many common industrial processes. Specialized RFID tags, however, are optimized for use on or around metal, and are an effective and viable alternative.

Method to the (Expansion) Madness: Some Common Threads
Click Commerce has been impressively active in its expansion efforts, and now offers quite a few solutions outside its traditional realm. While each of its solutions has a unique focus, the vendor's target market often requires solutions from several categories.

RFID TAG DESIGNER: solutions. The emergence of RFID has created market momentum for Click Commerce s global data synchronization (GDS) solutions, and was one of the reasons why the vendor looked at SCM companies during its most recent acquisition binge. The vendor views the RFID market as important because major, industry-leading retail chains (channel masters), including The Home Depot , SUPERVALU , Tesco , and Wal-Mart , in addition to the US Department of Defense ( DoD ) have announced initiatives that will require

The Multimodal Warehouse: Getting the Mobile Worker in the Loop
The final loop of information from a warehouse management system (WMS) to a warehouse worker and back is most critical—but in most systems, it’s also the weakest. Hand-held devices, such as touch-screens, bar code scanners, and RFID readers, can result in error-filled transactions. Learn how you can use multiple mobile devices more effectively to help improve the accuracy of your order fulfillment and inventory processes.

Supply Chain 101: The Basics You Need to Know
Today’s manufacturers face increasing global competition and complex manufacturing networks. Supply chain management provides manufacturers with the needed visibility into their supply chain, as well as software solutions, to help give them a competitive edge.

RFID TAG DESIGNER: by radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The TMS software is one of the key components to the supply chain. This software manages the scheduling of all transport modes used to move products from one location to another, in addition to finding the best routes to take and determining which products are best transported by what type of transportation (that is, truck, rail, sea, or plane). TMS software also allows individuals within the transportation network, such as drivers or managers, to log

RFID Case Study: HP and Wal-Mart
HP is making strides in complying with Wal-Mart's RFID mandates. This article describes the key lessons learned.

RFID TAG DESIGNER: and consistent reads using RFID with products containing metals and liquids, which interfere with the RF signal. HP has been confronting these challenges in their Chester, VA plant in the tagging of their inkjet cartridges, which contain both liquid and metal and are wrapped in foil. By experimenting with the placement of the tag on the carton, HP learned that if there was a gap between the cartridge and the place on the carton where the tag was attached, the company could avoid interference problems.
